Delightful Bavaria at the Walt Disney World Resort’s Biergarten by Todd Blay
Avoiding the buffets at Walt Disney World could be a blunder. There is a score of wonderful cuisines featured at numerous buffet places in the park. Not only are they fast and easy, but they also have themes and ornamentations to complement their dishes. And it’s one huge party, if the ambience is ripe. The Biergarten is among Disney World’s most preferred buffet restaurants.
The Motif
The foremost thing you detect as you approach the Biergarten is the theme. It looks like an authentic outdoor beer garden. Are you perchance in a tiny village in Bavaria? Have you staggered into a joyous celebration of Oktoberfest?
You’ll also observe that the Biergarten is provisioned with long tables. That is ideal if you have a huge group. But if there is only a handful of you, you might find yourself sitting with other visitors you have never met. Almost like in Europe! Or at a community cookout. Or a reception. Do not resist this. Make friends. Be friendly. You never know who the person next to you may end up being. Someone unusual and engaging with stories to tell.
The Entertainment
The oompah band – a four-piece Bavarian-style band – plays music every 45 minutes. If somehow you’ve not heard an oompah band, you’ll truly enjoy the cheery rhythms. The band, in traditional costume, of course — encompasses a tuba – supplying the oom – and an accordion, clarinet and trombone providing the pah. Or sometimes the pah-pah. Folk music, it goes without saying. Lots of polkas and waltzes. There is a dance floor right in front of the band and diners are rallied to dance. Everybody dances – all ages. So stand up and dance. You might even find yourself dancing with your new friend at your table.
The Beer
The Biergarten provides a vast variety of beers you don’t typically find elsewhere. Of course it does. It is a Biergarten! Be bold. Order a pint. Venture into the Franziskaner Weisse. If you can’t make up your mind, you could go for a sampling of a number of beers. There’s wine on the menu too. However, understand that beer and wine aren’t packaged in the price of the meal, only soft drinks.
The Food
Bavarians dine on lots of wurst. That’s sausage to you. But if you aren’t a sausage lover, there are lots of other luscious stuff to eat. Spaetzle and schnitzel, for instance. You’ll need to go to discover what that is. No, alright. Here are some clues: spaetzle is like small dumplings or pasta. Imagine macaroni and cheese or meat. Schnitzel is breaded and fried, flattened meat, normally pork or veal. Sure, you have tried that before. It is great. People the world over make that.
If you love pretzel bread, Biergarten has its own version. And for those picky children who won’t try anything they haven’t tried before, Biergarten has a run-of-the-mill, home-cooked macaroni and cheese.
And indeed, there are greens. Apart from the standard red cabbage, there are Salads and other healthy things on the menu.
And the desserts are tasty treats too. Try the berry compote. Or the Bavarian cheesecake!
If you are on a rather tight budget, the Biergarten offers a special, smaller lunch menu at a discount.
